What Is Trauma-Informed Counselling? (And How It Shapes Individual and Couple Therapy)

Beyond "What’s Wrong With You?"
When people hear the word trauma, they often think of extreme, single events. But in my practice as a counsellor and anthropologist, I view trauma more broadly: it is not just what happened to you, but what happens inside your body and nervous system as a result, when an experience was too fast, too much, or too sudden to process.
Trauma-informed counselling shifts the question from "What is wrong with you?" to "What happened to you, and how has your nervous system adapted to keep you safe?"
Whether you are navigating cross-cultural life transitions, chronic burnout, or recurring relationship friction, a trauma-informed lens ensures that therapy moves at the pace of safety.
The Core Pillars of a Trauma-Informed Approach
Safety and Stabilization First
Before we dive into heavy history, we build internal and external resources. Healing doesn’t happen in a state of overwhelm; it happens when your nervous system feels regulated enough to explore.
Empowerment and Choice
Trauma often involves a loss of control. In trauma-informed therapy, you are always in the driver’s seat. We work collaboratively, honouring your boundaries and pacing.
An Integrated Mind-Body Lens
Cognitive understanding (insight) is only half the equation. True healing requires involving the body that carries our implicit memory, defensive patterns, and stress responses.
How Trauma-Informed Principles Apply to Couple Work
Trauma isn’t just an individual experience; it sits in the space between two people. When one or both partners carry unhealed trauma or attachment wounds, romantic relationships can easily trigger "fight, flight, freeze, or fawn" responses.
In my work with couples, I integrate The Gottman Method with trauma-informed and somatic awareness:
Recognizing Physiological Flooding: Dr. John Gottman’s research highlights that when a partner's heart rate exceeds ~100 bpm during conflict, rational communication shuts down. A trauma-informed approach teaches couples how to spot physiological distress early and take effective co-regulatory breaks.
Reframing Triggers as Attachment Wounds: Instead of seeing your partner as the "enemy," we use Gottman tools to uncover the "raw spots" beneath recurring arguments, transforming conflict into a gateway for compassion.
What This Looks Like in Practice: Individual vs. Couple Counselling
For Individuals (Somatic Experiencing): We track body sensations, discharge bound energy from past stress, and expand your window of tolerance so you feel more grounded in your daily life.
For Couples (Gottman + Trauma Lens): We establish emotional safety, de-escalate destructive conflict loops, and rebuild trust and shared meaning - helping you find your way back to each other.
Come home to yourself (and each other)
Healing isn't about fixing something that is broken; it’s about unwinding the adaptations that no longer serve you so you can feel truly at home in yourself and in your relationships.
